A forest in the middle of the Arizona desert sounds ridiculous, unless it's one of the sparkly gemstone woodlands of Petrified Forest National Park! It's definitely nothing like any other forest in the country, since all the wood has pretty much been turned into stone. Where are the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park? The Petrified Forest National Park is about three hours east of the Grand Canyon, one hour east of Flagstaff, Arizona and three hours west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The painted desert spans from the east side of the Grand Canyon to the northern border of the Petrified Forest.

Petrified wood (from the Latin root petro meaning "rock" or "stone"; literally "wood turned into stone") is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial action is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process that often includes permineralization and replacement.   Petrified Forest National Park is a drive-through park, much like Flagstaff’s Sunset Crater Volcano & Wupatki National Monuments and California’s Joshua Tree National Park.. Although guests can begin exploring the park from either entrance, I recommend driving north to south along the mile route, beginning at the Painted Desert Visitor Center.

During this time the area that is now Petrified Forest National Park was located along the western coast of the supercontinent Pangaea and located approximately four degrees above the equator, roughly equivalent to modern-day Panama! the layers can be read in order like the pages of a book. : Petrified Forest: A Story in Stone () by Ash, Sidney R. and a great selection of similar New, Used and Collectible Books available now at great prices.4/5(9).
